Nikolaos is a Greek name which derives from root words:

Nikē

Victory

Laos

People

The meaning of Nikolaos is therefore ‘Victory of the People’, or some paraphrase to ‘People’s Champion’.

Nikolaos of Myram is also known as Nicholas of Bari, or Saint Nicholas. Obeying Jesus teaching to sell up all you have and give it to the poor, Nikolaos used his whole, large inheritance to assist the needy, sick and suffering.

Saint Nicholas is the Patron Saint of children, seafarers and retailers, and his symbol is a crozier (a hooked staff used by bishops).

There are so many variations too: Nicole (English), Nikos (Greek), Kai (German), Niccolo (Italian), Nikolai (Russian), Mykola (Ukrainian), Nicolette (French), Nicola (Czech), Nika (Croatian), Nikora (Maori).
